Interns
from the Barbados Community College (BCC) had
the chance to receive hands-on experience in the
world of communications and film during their
internship programme at SFA Communications Inc.
and sister company Blue Waters Production.
Nahshonda Hall and Tyson Weekes are completing
their first year in the Mass Communications
programme at BCC. In the programme, students
receive practical training for six weeks in
the field of communications at media houses
and communications firms and departments, to
assist them as they enter the world of work.
Nahshonda Hall, an aspiring film writer had
the opportunity to work in film. She was instructed
in Product Placement, a process where she had
to identify, through branding, the sponsors
of the film “Hit for Six”. Other
tasks included Scene Identification, a comparison
of the film to the script and a bit of Event
Planning as well.
Tyson Weekes was attached to the Public Relations
department where he received training in Media
Monitoring for clients such as CWC 2007 and
LIAT. In media monitoring Tyson was taught the
tedious process of identifying stories for clients,
scanning, emailing and arranging into summary
sheets. He was also exposed to Event Planning
and had the chance to attend business meetings
with clients.
Over the six weeks, both Nahshonda and Tyson
agreed that they gained sound knowledge of the
duties and responsibilities one holds in the
communications and film development fields.
“I have been able to improve my communications
skills as before I was a very shy individual.”
Hall stated. “Such training will be beneficial
for me as I progress in the area of Mass Communications
to effectively get across my opinions to others.”
Weekes agreed with Hall and in addition stated:
“I have also learnt during my internship
to be patient and flexible. Being able to adapt
to any situation is something I have observed
from the staff of SFA. This lesson will assist
me in the future when I am attending to clients’
needs, and making important decisions in the
interest of my client.”
